A stay at home mom of 3 in SC was looking for something to get her out of the house and found it in running. She took to it more and more every day until she won a local marathon there. Try www.msn.com for this story, it was there yesterday evening.
This article has me asking one simple question, "What the hell is supposed to be so impressive here?" She legally blind, which means she still has some sight, which means she could probably see if she was running towards a tree. And even if she was totally blind, she ran a marethon, big deal, I shoot pistols, you don't see me with my name in the paper. We all do things like this, whether we think about it or not. Now, if the headline read, "Totally blind woman performs successful open heart surgery", I'll interview her for the article myself, she damn well deserves it at that point. But running a marethon, its not really impressin' me here, maybe I'm just an asshole.
We all have a right to our own opinions, but at least one thing I've learned on this board came to mind: unemployment tends to be higher among the blind than among the general population, and it looks to me this lady, like a sighted one I knew years ago, was starting to feel the walls close in on her. Legally blind, last I heard, was what I see without glasses, 20/200 in the strongest eye, and obviously anything worse, where the optometrist would express accuity in "20/CF" or "Counting fingers" as after 200 feet that is how vision is measured. Both of my grandparents went blind from macular degeneration, and while gramps could walk short distances with assistance, I just can't picture him running.
